Crystallization reactor purpose - Extract oil
Dissolve oil
Dissolve the clarified oil in pentane, making sure the vent/condenser of the jacketed vessel is connected to a suitable blower motor or fume hood to vent pentane vapors. The boiling point of pentane is 36 °C. Pentane releases many vapors even at lower temperatures. , make sure the vessel condenser cools down to -20 °C. Add pentane and oil in a 1:2 ratio in a jacketed vessel. Turn on agitation and turn on the heating bath and set to 45 °C. Wait until the solution reaches 45°C and all the oil is dissolved.
Precipitation
Set the bath to 5°C. Slow down mixing speed. crystals will form spontaneously or "flush" out of the pentane solution. Continue to reduce the temperature to at least -10 degrees Celsius. The temperatures you use and how they change over time can change the growth of the crystals.
Collect crystals
Once precipitation has stopped, rinse or physically remove crystals from the reactor. Rinse the crystals with ice-cold pentane to flush impurities from the crystal surfaces. More rinses with pentane can improve poor color, but reduce overall yield. Keeping the and material cool during this step will help improve yields.
